Still water at Perranuthnoe

After a busy week, it’s time to celebrate the arrival of the weekend.

As predicted, my knitting is progressing slowly, never mind, mitten number two is on it’s way.

Despite having a busy week, I did have time for a little wander near the sea. Perranuthnoe is looking gorgeous and has recently become my favourite beach.

It’s often quiet at this time of year, and always beautiful. Not only is the beach lovely, but the rocky-road from The Cabin is fab too. It was a tiny wooden shed that specialised in home made cakes, but this has been demolished and a larger wooden building is being put in it’s place. I’m normally wary of change, but I am quite excited about this development; the new cabin will have some inside seating and an amazing view, I can’t wait for it to open.

The Cabin is one of few eatery developments that seem to be happening around PZ at them moment. It feels like the town is coming out of hibernation and preparing for the summer season. I’m becoming quite hopeful that we might survive the economic downturn after all.

One snow day mitten

The mitten actually fits the hand that it is destined to keep warm. This is normally where my knitting falls down, so I’m making progress. Now I just need to knit mitten number two, I don’t seem to be as fast as many knitting bloggers, but I’ll do my best.

The Aran wool, is from Knitwits in Penzance. It’s British,  so it must be good for my carbon footprint with it’s minimal wool miles.

This message doesn’t seem to have reached Penzance, it is definitely spring here. My crocuses are poking out of the soil in and it is warm and beautiful outside. I have spent the afternoon sunbathing at the beach!

What Penzance lacks in economic prosperity, it more than makes up for in proximity to the beach. When the sun is shining I fall in love with my coastal town all over again. The coastal path between Marazion and Penzance was full of people gently wandering and looking shocked to be outside without rain coats and snow hats.

This fantastic January sunshine has left Penzance smiling. I hope everyone else has found a sunny spot to enjoy this lovely high pressure system.

Frost and delicate snow on my new calendar

This year I am following the seasons using Chris Hardman’s beautiful Ecological Calendar. It has four panels, one for each season. The calendar tracks the tides, sun, moon, planets and stars and illustrates the changing natural history of each season.

The lovely illustrations match my current caribou obsession. There are no reindeer in Penzance, yet I feel captivated by the migrating caribou herds of Alaska. The cold weather has drawn me towards the tundra regions of the world.

Little lavender bags

Not being able to visit the tundra, I am doing the next best thing and knitting caribou. Not quite the same, but nevertheless I am happily filling my home with little caribou lavender bags.

Maybe 2011 will be the year of seasonal knitting.

A happy festive elf

It’s time to relax, watch festive films, eat festive goodies and spread the love!

For the last few weeks I have been happily knitting little elves, presents and reindeer; hopefully they are all happy in their new homes. I’m now contemplating a new knitting project, it might be time for an actual piece of clothing (or… I might just sit back and eat some Christmas cake).

But, there really is no excuse for producing vast amounts of paper for a single use. I have to accept that it really is a little bit selfish to add to the yearly supply of wrapping paper that is thrown away.

If laid end to end, the wrapping paper chucked away each year in the UK would stretch around the equator nine times!

Little recycled gift bags

I am not going cold turkey, I still have wrapping paper from last year that needs using up, but I am going to make a step in the right direction.

A page from the Guardian Magazine is just the right size to make little gift bags, perfect for Christmas goodies. I think I’m going to tie them up with some recycled sparkly ribbon from last year.

There are still some wonderful scenes remaining. Church Cove on the Lizard is looking lovely. Icicles cover the cliff face and sparkle happily in the sun.

Early morning snow on the Abbey Slip

I understand that snow can be problematic, and I am sure that the joy it brings might wear off after a while. But, we don’t get too much extreme weather down here and I was feeling a little bit left out.

Having been sent home from work, I am looking forward to an afternoon of mince-pie magic and I might even bake my Christmas cake.

Wonderful colour

I’m not so keen on the dark evenings, but the setting sun seems to amplify the soft colours of West Penwith. It is quite stunning.

November might just be my favourite time of year. It’s just getting cold enough for gloves and scarves and hats and blustery visits to the beach. The colder temperatures still feel like a little bit of a novelty. I know that come February, I will be craving some warmth, but at the moment I’m quite content to savour the winter chills.
